Wish You Were Here
June 18 - October 3, Level 3

This exhibit of unique, colorful vintage post cards from the early decades of the 20th century features images on a variety of popular subjects as well as various communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. These postcards pre-date the common glossy photo card and include examples produced by photo-mechanical printing processes as well as actual photographic cards. Some of these can be considered small gems of "mail-able" art. "Wish You Were Here" also introduces the newly acquired Ruth Schultz Collection of postcards to the public.

Curatorial Exhibit Tour of James Andersen: Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures
Wednesday, August 13, 7:30 pm
Join us for an engaging curatorial tour of the exhibit James Andersen: Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures. Guest curator Rhonda Buckley will be on-hand to take you on a journey through James Andersen's extensive work and answer all your questions.

Events included in the cost of admission to The Rooms.

In 2006, guest curator Rhonda Buckley completed a documentary on James Andersen using interviews and excerpts of his film and photographic work. The following year Buckley made extensive sound recordings of Andersen describing his work and telling stories of the people and places he had recorded. James Andersen: Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures is a culmination of this work and includes a selection of archival records that are brought to life with Andersen's own words.

The James Andersen collection documents over 50 years of community life in and around Makkovik, Labrador. The stories that accompany "Uncle Jim's" work explain why for over 50 years he has never been without a camera as he documented daily rituals and Labrador life, including attending Church and community events, hunting, family customs and traditions, fishing, etc.

Andersen's collection has been called the "largest collection of photographs from a single community in Canada" (Sam Kula - Archival Consultant). It represents a remarkable record of community and family life in Labrador that will be passed on for generations.

James Andersen:Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures is guest curated by Rhonda Buckley and produced by The Nunatsiavut Government and The Rooms Provincial Archives.
