Culture and Heritage

The Provincial Historic Sites of Newfoundland and Labrador provide a glimpse into our past, and an insight into our heritage. Across the province visitors can learn about domestic life at various periods, the technology of communications and lighthouses, the mercantile system, political issues, the harsh existence of soldiers in an early nineteenth century barrack, and can gain a little insight into the life of the Beothuk people.

Provincial Historic Sites have been designated under the Historic Resources Act because of their historical or architectural significance. While many are interpreted to the public, there are others which are preserved and protected but are not operated as tourist attractions.

Over the next few years the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation will be undertaking an initiative to renew its system of Provincial Historic Sites with a view to:

  • Making the sites more engaging for visitors
  • Increasing visitation by local residents
  • Attracting more school groups
  • Broadening the range of important stories and themes that are interpreted
