Common Questions
How do I get involved in the NL Games?
There are nine sports represented in the 2008 NL Summer Games, each with specific ages. Visit the Technical Package for the Sport you are interested in and contact the Regional Representative to see when the try-outs for that sport take place. If there is no regional contact, e-mail the Technical Chair!
When do the Games start/end?
For the sports that take place in the first half, athletes living a certain distance from Corner Brook will be bussed to Corner Brook on August 9th to take part in the opening ceremonies. Competition will take place the following day, and conclude on Tuesday, August 12th when athletes return home. For sports in the second half, athletes arrive in Corner Brook on August 13th, and compete the following day concluding on Saturday, August 16th, take part in Closing Ceremonies and arrive home later that day.
Where will we stay? How much do the Games cost?
Athletes will stay at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell dorms, along with the coach/manager chaperones. Athletes will bring sleeping bags and pillows and SINGLE air mattresses. Bussing is provided to and from the Games for Athletes who live outside of the Host region (some exceptions may apply). All meals are provided at no cost to the athletes.
Can I compete in two sports?
Athletes may compete in one sport only. There are a number of rules and regulations athletes and teams must adhere to in order to participate in the NL Games. These rules and regulations can be found on this site. Please read them carefully as sometimes, the NL Games rules and regulations are quite different from a sport’s own rules and regulations.
Do I have to stay in the Athlete’s Village?
All athletes, coaches and managers must stay in the Athlete’s Village if they are to participate in the NL Games. Again, this rule can be found in the Rules and Regulations section. Athletes who do not stay in the Village will not be allowed to participate. Athletes who assert that they are ill and unable to stay in the Village will have their case reviewed however, generally, athletes who are not well are not allowed to register for the NL Games. All athletes must complete a medical form before being allowed to attend the NL Games.
Am I allowed to visit my parents when I am at the NL Games?
Your coach will assess each situation and answer that question. No overnight visits are permitted and there will be a curfew each night during your stay. All of these rules are in place to protect you and your coach and to assure your families that you are being looked after!
I have allergies to many foods. Will there be special diets?
There will be over 1500 athletes, coaches and managers at the NL Games with very few paid staff involved. Most are volunteers who will do their best to manage major issues. Menus will be free of fish and peanuts but regrettably, staff will not be able to accommodate any other food requirements such as gluten allergies, vegetarians and so forth. Individuals with special needs will have to make their own arrangements for meals. Athletes who miss meal times will also have to arrange their own meals.
