South Brook Park

The South Brook Park archaeological site contains the second oldest dated Maritime Archaic occupation on the island, 5140±50 BP.

The site is located behind the pumphouse.

One of the goals of the excavation was to find more charcoal for radiocarbon dating. In this unit a dark charcoal stain was visible near the surface.

This may have been a hearth (fireplace) or a smudge pit for smoke.

Precontact cultural material was associated with this charcoal stain.

This full channelled gouge was found at the site in the early 1990s by David Reader who originally discovered the site.
