Doug Wheeler was a Provincial civil servant known to many as “Mr. Tourism”. This award commemorates his efforts to promote Newfoundland and Labrador as a tourism destination, and the high standards he employed while doing so. Mr. Wheeler passed away in 1981 while still an employee of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
This award is sponsored by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and is given to the person or group who has done the most in the past year to develop or promote the tourism industry in this province. It may also be awarded to recognize longstanding service in the industry. The award is presented annually during the Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador Convention.
The selection committee will look for outstanding contributions in the field of tourism. The committee will base its selection on the criteria that are listed on the nomination form. A numeric scoring system for the selection criteria will be used by the selection committee in determining the award recipient.
